3 ways to convince someone to get into social media

We all know at least a few people who refuse to participate in social media. And while everyone has their reasons why they prefer not to, there are plenty more reasons TO do it, especially if you own a business. Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a corporate ladder-climber, being active on social media can be very beneficial.

But you already knew that.

To help you convince your friend, boss or even your favorite restaurant owner to get on the social bandwagon, here are 3 points to make to help them sign on:

  • Privacy does not have to be an issue

The #1 reason most people are afraid of social media is the issue of privacy. After the NSA scandal and with Facebook making headlines consistently about their terms and conditions, it’s no wonder people are fearful of the information that may get shared without them knowing. But remind them that the only info that gets out to the public is the info they choose to share. They don’t have to reveal their birthdate or birth location on their Facebook profile if they don’t want to. They can choose to only update their statuses from the computer at work, so they don’t have to worry about social networks tracking their mobile phone usage and location (not that it’s anything to stress about). Privacy online is possible with just a little bit of effort.

  • It’s a world filled with friendly strangers

There are people who join the social crowd to promote their business, but there are even more people who join the social crowd because it’s a place filled with weird, fun online personalities. You will never know who you’ll run into on Twitter, and who knows, maybe even a celebrity could personally tweet or thank you. It’s happened many times before, where big-name people will reach out to their strange fans. Brands like Taco Bell often reply back to their fans. Even random people from across the world can see your tweet and reply back to your post about your love for House of Cards. Sometimes, all people want on social media is just a little bit of love, whether from a brand, celebrity, or someone across the pond in another country, and they’re willing to give some of it back. It’s not such a scary place after all.

  • It’s how people are getting found and hired

Unless the person you’re trying to convince is comfortable where they are in life, a lot of business owners are looking to grow their business and expand their network. While weekly cocktail hour at the local bar may seem sufficient enough for the local entrepreneur, there’s a limit to the number of people you’ll be interacting with. With social media, you can instantly connect with millions of people, and if you put the right keywords in your bios, people will find you based on what they’re looking for. We’re not suggesting that social media replaces face-to-face interaction, but why not tap into a world filled with people who you haven’t met yet, who may be good for your business?

There are many many reasons why someone should join social media, whether it’s to keep up with family or to grow their business. What other ideas do you have that we may have missed?
